Botox® Treatment for Migraines

April 16, 2019 Gina Bradford

Dr. Brandon Claflin & Botox®

Botox® is the only FDA-approved treatment to prevent chronic migraines. A migraine is defined as chronic if you are having 15 or more headaches a month, with 8 of those days experiencing a migraine, with the headache lasting 4 or more hours. What makes Botox® unique is it is considered a preventative treatment, which means it will prevent migraines before they even start. Chronic migraines can be debilitating and keep you from your family and career, if you are experiencing chronic migraines call Oklahoma Interventional Spine and Pain and make an appointment with Dr. Brandon Claflin.

Millions Suffer

In the U.S., more than 38 million people suffer from migraines. Studies estimate that 13 percent of adults in the U.S. have migraines, and 2 to 3 million suffer chronic migraines. Botox® injections for chronic migraines are not the same as Botox® treatment for aesthetics.

Headaches vs Migraines

Migraines differ from traditional headaches by the symptoms. Most migraine sufferers experience the following symptoms with the onset of a migraine:

  • nausea
  • pain centralized behind one eye
  • sensitivity to light, sound and smells
  • your vision is blurry
  • dizziness or lightheaded

Treatment Protocol

In most cases, the Botox® treatment for chronic migraines will require treatment every 12 weeks. If you do not get treated every 12 weeks you may not get the benefit you desire from Botox®. The treatment includes a series of 30-40 injections around the head and neck. Since Botox® for migraines is FDA-approved it is usually covered by your health insurance. The most common side-effect is neck pain, experienced by approximately 9% of people.
